Covering pits is an essential part of preparing for winter – rural water meter pits as well as the user’s own pits on their yard. Having them covered can help prevent costly and inconvenient meter and pipeline freeze-ups. The pits are basically just holes in the ground that serve an important purpose. During the winter, these holes allow the ground heat to escape easily.
cover the pitsProper ways to cover the pit include putting plastic or tarp over the pit, extending it 2 – 3 feet around the lid and weighting in down with bales of hay or something to keep the tarp or plastic from blowing away. This will keep the heat from escaping from the pit.
Covering the pits should take place late fall to ensure the ground heat is captured. But if you haven’t already done so, it’s not too late!
